Directed by Lindsay Butler, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, the Brain and Language on the Autism Spectrum Team examines the behavioral and neural correlates of communication in autistic children and adolescents who use minimal or no spoken language. We use natural language sampling, experimental psycholinguistic methods and functional near-infrared spectroscopy for brain imaging to characterize language use and understanding and identify the mechanisms that underlie limited spoken language development. Our goal is to identify profiles of strengths that can improve communication supports for autistic individuals with minimal spoken language and their families.
